Instructions for Differences between Mixed Gambles


THIS IS A NEW TASK: READ INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY!

On each trial, you will see two gambles, side by side. Your new task is the judge how much more you would like to play the gamble on the right compared to the gamble on the left; that is you are to judge the DIFFERENCE between the gamble on the right compared to the gamble on the left. If you prefer the gamble on the right, click to the right of the center; if you prefer the gamble on the left, you will click to the left of center; and if you like them equally, click in the center.

You will also indicate the size of the DIFFERENCE, by using the scale as follows:

10% from left = Like the LEFT gamble very much more
20% from left = Like the LEFT gamble much more
30% from left = Like the LEFT gamble more
40% from left = Like the LEFT gamble slightly more
50% from left = Like both gambles EQUALLY (middle of line)
60% from left = Like the RIGHT gamble slightly more
70% from left = Like the RIGHT gamble more
80% from left = Like the RIGHT gamble much more
90% from left = Like the RIGHT gamble very much more

So, the more you like the gamble on the Right, compared to the one on the left, the farther your mark will be to the right. If you would like or dislike them equally, you should click in the middle of the scale. If you like the left one better, your click will be left of the middle, and the more you like the left better, the farther to the left your mark should be.

Obviously, if the two gambles are the same, you should click in the center of the scale.

After a few warmup trials, you learn know how to use the scale to show us the magnitude of your preference for one gamble over the other. If you want to adjust your response, you can click or drag to the spot along the line that expresses your judgment comparing the two people.
